Benjamin Harrison - with Periodic Presidents

Benjamin Harrison came from a long line of influential Americans. His dad, John Scott Harrison was a Congressman, his grandfather was famed general and 9th President William Henry Harrison, and his great grandfather, Benjamin Harrison V was a signer of the declaration of independence. He became a senator after serving in the civil war, and prevented Grover Cleveland from serving consecutive terms.

In the election of 1888, the former senator from Indiana, defeated the incumbent president, Grover Cleveland. Tariffs were the main issue in this election, with Harrison favoring a strong, protective tariff. When the votes came in, Cleveland won the popular vote, but lost the electoral vote, due largely to New York and Indiana going to Harrison.

More states were admitted to the Union under the Harrison Administration than any other presidency. North and South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming all became states during Harrison's time in office. These states brought in new voters, and new issues.

The 1892 Election was a rematch of the 1888 election, but this time, Grover Cleveland defeated the incumbent Harrison. Harrison returned home after his presidency, but still remained very active, serving in a variety of roles with various organizations. Harrison died from pneumonia at his home in Indianapolis on March 13, 1901, at the age of 67.
