In short we had no just cause to covet the sumptuous feasts of our countrymen on this day." ​

Hardtack was, for lack of betters terms, the MREs of 17th, 18th, and 19th century armies and navies. This hard baked "cracker" is made with nothing but flour, a pinch of salt, and water. If prepared and stored correctly, hardtack would last for week, month, and even years.
