Join us at the Gates House in York, Pennsylvania as we delve into the story of General Horatio Gates and his pivotal stay in York, Pennsylvania during the harsh winter of 1777/1778.
Horatio Gates, the victor of the Battle of Saratoga, also served as the president of the Board of War... a post he filled while retaining his field command in the Continental Army. This post technically made him Washington's civilian superior, conflicting with his lower military rank.
The story also includes his participation in what became known as the Conway Cabal... an attempt by some members of the Continental Congress to replace George Washington as the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army with Gates. The story of the Gates House cannot be complete without mentioning the legend of the famous toast that the Marquis de Lafayette supposedly made to General Washington bringing an end to the Conway Cabal!
